Basic Open Water Scuba Diver
Course Overview: Scuba diver is the entry-level scuba certification course. It will provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills required for scuba diving. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are considered competent to engage in open water diving activities without supervision, provided that the diving activities and areas dived approximate those of training.
Course Prerequisites: The minimum age is 15 years old for Basic Open Water Scuba Diver certification. Students are required to complete and sign liability and medical waivers. Students should be comfortable in the water as they will have to demonstrate both swimming and scuba related skills during the confined water training session of this course. A Junior Basic Open Water Scuba Certification can be obtained for children ages 10 through 14.
Course Schedule: This course is primarily taught from April to early November (dependent on water temperature) although classroom and confined water training can take place anytime during the year if the student would like to complete this certification through the use of our Universal Referral Program (contact us for additional information on this).
Course Length: The open water certification process normally takes a week and a half to two weeks to complete. The course is broken down into three parts:
Classroom: made up of home study and classroom setting, which is completed through E-Learning. A written test will be administered; minimum passing score is 75%. Confined Water Training: pool training is where skills are learned and perfected. Open Water Dives: a minimum of four (4) open water dives will be completed prior to certification being issued.
Course Fees: Please contact instructor for current course pricing. Private lessons are available for an additional fee. Fees include student training kit (E-Learning and dive tables), scuba equipment rental (scuba tank w/ unlimited air fills, regulator w/ gauges, buoyancy control device (BCD), pool rental fees, and certification costs.
Additional Student Costs: Students will additionally be responsible for purchasing / supplying the following equipment for successful completion of the course. Approved scuba mask, fins, snorkel, regulator mouthpiece, wetsuit and wetsuit booties. The purchase of a dive flag and dive knife are strongly encouraged but the instructor will provide these items. Costs of these items varies on type and style selected.
* Upon successful completion of this course, students will be awarded certification from either NAUI or SDI.
